DEEPLY ROOTED IN PLACE
We create landscapes that connect people to the land and to one another. Guided by discovery, reverence, and care, we begin every project by listening to clients, to communities, and to the land itself, so that what we design is authentic and meaningful.
Our practice serves the American West, with a focus on New Mexico, West Texas, and Colorado. Our portfolio includes private residences, hospitality destinations, cultural landscapes, commercial developments, and regional planning initiatives. Whatever the scale, we design places that are visionary and firmly grounded in context.
Our process combines rigorous analysis with creativity and craft. We study ecology, climate, and history alongside culture and community, drawing on these insights to design landscapes that restore balance, foster connection, and respond to the challenges of our time.
Surroundings is led by Principals-in-Charge Kenneth Francis, Faith Okuma, and Joseph Charles. Each brings a distinct strength: design vision and architectural insight, depth of planning and cultural perspective, and ecological systems with technical precision. Together, they guide a studio known for thoughtful, award-winning work, supported by a collaborative team with skills spanning landscape architecture, master planning, community development, design guidelines, and site development.
Our mission is to restore the relationship between people and place. We design not only for today, but for generations to come, crafting landscapes that are resilient, restorative, and timeless.
STUDIO CULTURE
Studio culture is at the heart of our practice. Collaboration, curiosity, and care shape how we work together, and we believe the strength of our team directly shapes the quality of our design.
Our studio is a place where dialogue sparks invention, diverse perspectives enrich solutions, and mentorship strengthens both individuals and the collective. We celebrate craft, encourage experimentation, and cultivate an environment where creativity and responsibility work in tandem.
The people of Surroundings embody these values. Each member brings unique skills and perspectives, contributing to landscapes that are thoughtful, resilient, and deeply rooted in place.
